Species Text Search Help

Return to Search
You may use boolean operators and wildcards to enhance your search:

Operator Effect Example
AND Searches for species profiles that have both words in them. tree AND maple
OR Searches for species profiles that have either word in them. tree OR maple
NOT Eliminates species profiles where the word is found. tree NOT maple
Comma , Same as OR operator. tree, maple
(Parentheses) Determines how ANDs and ORs are treated. Words within parentheses are considered as a unit, and are considered first. red OR (tree AND maple)
maple AND (tree NOT red)
"Quotation Marks" Quoted words or phrases are searched for literally. Useful when you want to search for the actual words "and" or "or". "green and leafy"
green AND "not leafy"
* The wildcard * stands in for any number of characters (including zero).
Search: Result:
ma* maple, magnolia
*ple maple, purple
m*e maple, myrtle
? The wildcard ? stands in for a single character. A search for ?ar?et would find both carpet and target, but not Learjet.
Note: If the search criteria are all lowercase or all UPPERCASE, the search will be case-insensitive; but, if the search criteria are Mixed Case, the search will be case sensitive.
